Pro Biafran Agitation: Northern and South East Leaders Meet.

Today 1/12/15; Governor Rochas hosted a meeting between Northern and South Eastern Traditional Rulers, under the umbrella of Consultative meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. The meeting took place at Owerri. Their mission to discuss the on going pro Biafran protest. Those in attendance include; Etsu Nupe, (HRH Alhaji Dr Yayaha Abubakar), Obi of Onitsha, Emir of Lafia, Emir of Fika, Gbong Gwon Jos etc.

Payment of N5,000 to Unemployed Nigerian Youths: Matters Arising.

Reading a comment credited to the Minister of Youths and Sports (Solomon Dalong), that the federal government has assured, it would commenced payment of N5,000 to unemployed youths. A lot of issues would need to be addressed  such as;

Who is an unemployed youth? How do you find out who is unemployed ? What about those under employed? What’s your definition of unemployment? Which register/database will you use to pay? How do you pay (by cash, meal coupons/tickets, through bank transfer etc). How long will you pay these unemployed youths (1 year, 2 years, 3 years etc) or till the end of this government in 2019?

Moving on: (Agreed you want to pay).

You need database/identification of people to pay. You might consider to accept the following as a means of identification  (drivers licence, international passport, bank accounts with BVN etc). Identification methods with peoples’ finger prints are highly recommended. Alternatively, you might want to start a new registration process, putting the above into considerations.

No Free Lunch: Attach the payment of this N5,000 to a sort of community services. Ask these unemployed youths to do about 3 to 4 hours of monthly community services,  such as planting trees/flowers along the roads, assign them to some ministries, that might need cleaners etc, helping to clear the gutters etc.

Most Western governments are pushing those on unemployment benefits to do one form of job or another. Some must do a minimum of 16 hrs per week, before they are paid their benefits in the UK. This approach will benefit the government, the society and the youths themselves.

Revealed: Yorubas Have Obas Outside South West.

Yoruba in North want end to herdsmen-farmers crisis By Njadvara Musa, Maiduguri on November 18, 2015 5:27 am. Vanguard.

THE Yoruba Council of Obas (YCOBs) in the 19 northern states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Monday advocated for “an amicable resolution” to the face-off between farmers in the South West sub-region and Fulani cattle herdsmen over water and grazing activities.

Rising from its fifth quarterly meeting in Abuja, the Council implored the Ondo State government to resolve the herdsmen-farmers’ conflict to avoid escalation to the northern parts of the country.

In a communiqué signed by the Council’s acting Chairman who is also the Mai (Oba) of Yoruba in Borno State, Alhaji Hassan Yusuf and Dr. Alani Adeyemi, Oba Yoruba Gombi, made available to newsmen in Maiduguri yesterday, it appealed to the Ondo state governor to use his wealth of experience in resolving the lingering problems between farmers and herdsmen.

“We implore the governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to use his good offices to resolve the ongoing crisis between the Fulani cattle herdsmen and farmers in the state, amicably and quickly to avoid a spill-over effect,” the council said.

It advised non-indigenes living in the southwest and north to abide by the rules and traditions of the areas, urging them to continue to live harmoniously and peacefully with their hosts. The council also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for what it described as his genuine efforts in addressing immediate needs of the country especially the fight against Boko Haram insurgency and other security challenges.

Biafran Agitation & Nigeria’s Injustices Against Igbos.

The author would start from 1970 to list the Nigerian State, well designed injustices against the Igbos. Perhaps why Igbos agitate. Quoting Ribadu, “Where you have injustice, you will have rebellion”.

1.The £20 policy: Every Igbo man or woman was given £20 after the civil ended in 1970, despite the amount of money, such a person had in the bank before/during the war.

2.Indigenization Decree of 1972. The then federal government nationalised most foreign companies in Nigeria. They sold share of these nationalised companies, when the Igbos had not found their feet, due to the war.

3.In 1976, the area of Ndoki South, present day Oyigbo  area in Rivers State was transferred from old Aba Division and  given to Rivers State. This is an oil producing community, originally belonging to old Imo State.

4. Parts of Egbema communities in Imo States, with large oil deposits were carved out and given to Rivers States. 

5. On September 28^th 1979, two (2) days to his hand over to President Shehu Shagari, General Obasanjo signed the Abandoned Properties Decree No 90 of 1979 into Law. By this decree, Igbos lost all the houses/properties they abandoned during the war in Port Harcourt. Igbos ran home from Port Harcourt, during the war. In the process, they left their properties. They never got back these properties, courtesy of federal government decree.

6. On 1st October 1979, the 1979 constitution became effective. This was the first time federal character principle was introduced into the Nigerian law books. Part of this federal character principle required, every Igbo person, to score the highest mark (higher than every other tribe),in order to gain admission into any federal government schools. Same approach was adopted in federal government employments etc. See an example of federal government secondary schools admission in 2013 below.

A careful study of the above will reveal to you that cut off marks for South East States, were the highest. These have been going on for decades.

7.  In the 1980’s, some villages were carved out of Ndoki, from then Imo State and joined with Akwa Ibom State.

8. There is no federal government industry in the South East. This is despite the fact, that 3 South East States (Abia, Anambra, Imo), are oil producing states and Igbos are scattered all over the country paying taxes to host States and federal government.

9. Till date, South East remains the only zone with five states. Other geo political zones have either six or seven states. Your states determines the number of senators, ministers, other appointments, recruitments into the civil service, military, paramilitary, monthly allocations etc that comes to your zone.

10. In 1998, every rule was bent in PDP, so as to make way for Obasanjo to emerge, when it became obvious that Ekwueme was likely going to win the PDP ticket. Atiku, IBB etc spearheaded this moves.

Having listed the injustices, it is the authors view, that to redress the above, requires diplomatic, political and judicial processes.

Nigerian Army Vs Pro Biafran Agitators.

Premium Times (an online news portal) reported on 16/11/15, about the threat of the Nigerian Army to use minimum force in stopping Biafran agitators. This is a very wrong strategy/tactics to use. This would be counter productive. You can defeat ideological movements with superior arguments. The federal government has not done counter arguments. Guess by now, the State Security Services would have reported that members of Pro Biafran agitators have remained peaceful, so no need to bring in the army. Besides, what is minimum force? Remember, the Biafran war started when Gowon declared an initial police action.

The Police can handle them. Bringing in the army can escalate the tensed situation, except it's a ploy to cause further tension, so as to declare state of emergency or anything of sorts.

So far the Ohanaeze and South East governments have invited the leaders of Pro Biafran agitators to a meeting. Chief Chekwas Okorie(former Presidential Candidate of United Progressive Grand Alliance) has offered to mediate if allowed. Time to give dialog a chance.

The pro Biafran agitators and the situation now is delicate. It requires proper handling, to avoid shielding of innocent blood and winning of more converts. It might appear easy on the surface, but it's not. The federal government should  either take Nnamdi Kanu to court or release him on bail, since according to his lawyers, he has fulfilled all his bail conditions.

On pro Biafran agitators, my advise would be to explore other options, like judicial and political routes. Best would be for them to have a political movement/political party. The crowds seen so far can elect a Governor or Senator etc to power. Every liberation group, has a political party.

Betrayal or True Confession Against Goodluck Jonathan.

Is this a betrayal or true confession against the choice of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost the last Presidential election. Surprisingly these statements are coming from prominent leaders of the South South region, that produced the last President. Are there things we do not know about the choice of Jonathan or betrayal or, is this a strategy to reposition themselves. Starting with the latest.

Prince Uche Secondus, Acting National Chairman of PDP described the 2015 Presidential  ticket given to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as a mistake. Recall that the Chairman of PDP's  Reconciliation Committee, Dr Raymond Dokpesi at his news conference on 10th November 2015, apologised to Nigerians, for the mistake of allowing Goodluck Jonathan to contest. Not long ago, Pa Edwin Clark, who acted as a father to Ex-President Jonathan, had come out to critize and condemn Goodluck Jonathan's government. What are your views on these developments?
